How to fix OJS email sending issues

Fix Open Journal Systems email delivery: SMTP settings, Google Workspace, SPF/DKIM, and common OJS notification failures explained for journal administrators.

Step-by-step SMTP troubleshooting for OJS journals.

1. Confirm OJS mail settings

In Site Settings → Emails, switch from PHP mail() to SMTP. Use your provider’s host, port (usually 587 with TLS), and authenticated credentials.

2. Google Workspace / Gmail

Enable 2-step verification and create an App Password. Use smtp.gmail.com, port 587, TLS. The “From” address must match an allowed mailbox.

3. SPF, DKIM, and DMARC

Publish SPF and DKIM for your sending domain. Without them, university mail servers often silently drop OJS notifications.

4. Test and monitor

Send a test email from OJS, check spam folders, and review server logs. If you need a production-ready setup, see our OJS installation service.
